ED-LINE NEWS
Calling out around the world,
are you ready for a brand new beat?

June 2006

Summer’s here at Rock-ED and the change of season always makes us wistful for the days when we cruised the Pacific Coast Highway in our ’33 Willys Woody, looking for the next big wave, Annette Funicello by our side. Or maybe it was Gidget? Ah, who can remember back that far anyway?

As wistful as we are for the ghosts of summers past, we get even more sentimental thinking about our new educational film and Web-based learning projects designed to engage students in the study of history, social studies and language arts by exploring the early rock ‘n’ roll experience from a variety of perspectives. (You’d be misty-eyed too if you had to come up with run-on sentences like that!) Click on a headline and see for yourself why we’re so excited:

Hold On Tight as Rock-ED Collides With RPM!

With an all-star line up of veteran classic rockers responsible for dozens of gold and platinum records and top 40 hits between them, RPM packs more mojo per square inch of stage floor than almost any band we can think of. That’s why when they asked us to help present their new concert film – One Night in Weston – to Florida PBS stations, we couldn’t refuse.

In the coming weeks, Rock-ED will be featuring in-depth interviews with members of RPM as part of our For the Record Oral History project. Stay tuned!

Hit the Road Jack: Florida’s Rock ‘N’ Roll History Tour!

From the soulful gospel sounds of the Shiloh Baptist Church on Ray Charles’ Avenue in Greenville to the platinum records on the wall at Miami’s Criteria Studios to the tropical paradise of Jimmy Buffet’s Key West, Hit the Road Jack! is a one-hour documentary film that celebrates the Sunshine State’s place in rock ‘n’ roll history by taking viewers on a road trip through Florida’s legendary (and in some cases notorious) rock ‘n’ roll landmarks.

Hit the Road Jack: Online! brings the adventure to the classroom, with a series of Web-based curriculum components that offer students in grades 6-12 an exciting opportunity to participate in the filmmaking process while learning about Florida history in a rock ‘n’ roll-themed, interactive environment!

Coming to Florida PBS in 2007 - Stay tuned to ED-Line News for updates!

For the Record: An Oral History of Rock ‘N’ Roll
from World War II to Watergate

Rock-ED presents For the Record - a dynamic collection of professionally produced interviews with a diverse group of musicians, writers, producers and other key innovators who shaped the evolution of rock ‘n’ roll from World War Two to Watergate.

By capturing and preserving firsthand accounts of the early rock ‘n’ roll experience, Rock-ED seeks to establish the Web’s most comprehensive source for early rock ‘n’ roll history scholarship, and in the process provide a unique and fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse into the history of the music we all know and love.

Recent additions to the For the Record archive include interviews with the legendary Roger McGuinn, best-selling author and historian Peter Guralnick and rock ‘n’ roll entrepreneur Les Kippel, founder of Relix Magazine, Relix Records and the Grateful Dead Underground Tape Exchange. Stay tuned to ED-Line News for upload dates!
